Today, more or less all of us who work face situations where in organizations lay off employees in thousands, shut down departments, factories, and sites. In this situations one set of people are directly affected the other set is emotionally affected by the news and situation and the environment. But all of us are stressed and anxious waiting in apprehension when the wave might hit me. Everytime one hears of a lay off in some organization, it adds a little more to that cup of anxiety. At the end of each day one thanks the universe for saving their job for one more day. Lin this anxiety leads to a limbo state, steals your motivation and happiness. In such a scenario, at work you are ready to take any kind of work/role offered even if it is not to your liking.
But do you need to put yourself through this emotional torture. No, think beyond and identify what else can you do? Lat doing something that might not be linked toyour current skill set. Plan this shift instead of taking up a job or task under pressure to keep the funds rolling. Planning and adding another way of earning will recession proof you for more than current period.
By identifying an additional skill set I mean that if you are a programmer, one option you have is to teach programming but then again if IT is in recession, your training might not fetch what you seek. However, if you are programmer but also sing as a hobby then consider teaching singing. Are you wondering but this is something I have not done ever. DOing something like this is really foolish. THink one more time!! Either way the risk is almost similar. If you have something to fall back on then it is can help reduce mental stress and make sure you are happy. If this approach rings a bell and strikes a chord and you are ready to take the first step by allowing yourself to think of other ways of earning your livelihood then you can follow the steps below.
1. Withdraw for a a few hours, days
2. List those things that you might have wanted to do all your life
3. List skills other than your core skill set. Let's say rowing, cooking, dancing, music, writing.
4. List out the risks if you choose to take up one of these.
5. List the risk of going full time.
6. List the risk of going part time and building up on the secondary skill set you have identified
7. Based on 5 and 6 go for full time or part time
8. Make a plan and returns. Plan could include enhancing your skills further in this area and then plan the returns.
9 Start it and do not give up.
Doing it all with your current job/responsibilities might take time but then it will ramp and couple weeks down you'll be able to fit it in your routine. We are very flexible and so is the time and space available to us.
You are not far from proofing yourself from pains of recessions. Go on take the guts to do it and reap the benefits of beign multi skilled.
